When it comes to water sports, there’s a vast variety to choose from. Whether you’re young, old, a thrill-seeker or a beginner, there’s something for everyone.

In the United States, water sports are evident both indoors and out. With its gorgeous and extensive coastline, vast lakes, and lengthy rivers, the United States is the ideal place for partaking in or watching water sports. There are hundreds of major competitions to take in every year, as well as thousands of great places and activities to get involved with, all year round.

So, what are the best water sports in the United States? Daniel Klibanoff, entrepreneur and water sport enthusiast of Asheville, North Carolina, shares four of the most popular ones below.

Sailing

Suitable for either competition or leisure, sailing is one of the most popular water sports in the United States. Sailing specifically refers to the sport of using wind to power sails (rather than engines) and propel the boat forward on the surface of the water.

The best time to sail is from December to May every year, the time when the winds are very strong yet, consistent in nature, making the sailing experience smooth and enjoyable, says Daniel Klibanoff.

Windsurfing

Windsurfing is a water sport that combines elements of surfing and sailing. The equipment used in wind surfing is a surfboard and a sail fixed on a movable mast. When completing the sport, the windsurfer aims to move with the waves to control the board and at the same time manage the sail according to the winds.

Much like sailing, windsurfing is best enjoyed December and May (in warmer climates) when the winds are strong, yet consistent, but can be enjoyed in the summer months for those residing in cooler climates.

Swimming

Arguably one of the most commonly known water sports in the United States, swimming, is an individual or team sport that involves using your body (arms and legs) to move through the water. Typically, swimming takes place in pools or in open water (e.g., in an ocean or lake). Swimming is a sport that tests your fitness and stamina but is also extremely fun.

Kayaking

Kayaking is a water sport that is highly sought after. It can be practiced in competition or leisure and is suitable for young and old. The sport involves using a kayak and a paddle to move across the water. It is distinguished from canoeing by the sitting position of the paddler and the number of blades on the paddle, says Daniel Klibanoff. Most kayaks have closed decks, although sit-on-top and inflatable kayaks are growing in popularity as well.
