With the world preparing for a slightly different new year amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, people everywhere are continually being urged to stay home and keep their distance from others.
Staying in and self-isolating has definitely become our new normal, but that doesn’t mean that it’s easy. Being away from friends and family can get the best of us, but that’s why it’s important to do what we can to support both our physical and mental well-being. Even if you’re working from home, it may still feel like there is a lot of time to fill during the day.
To help us cope with this new, isolating reality, Daniel Klibanoff of Asheville, North Carolina, serial entrepreneur and president and CEO of Multimedia Lists, Inc. shares three things you can do to keep busy and mentally healthy while in lockdown.
Keep a Consistent Routine
Routine? What’s that? It may seem like your normal routine has been completely disrupted since the global pandemic hit. But, it’s important to find some type of consistency every day — yes, even in this new reality. For example, Daniel Klibanoff recommends the following tips for maintaining a consistent routine during lockdown:
· Wake up at the same every day.
· Keep on track with a healthy diet; eat your meals at the same time each day.
· Make time for movement and exercise (even if it’s a light walk or an in-home stretching session)
· Check in with yourself to make sure your daily routine is on track.
· Aim to go to bed at the same time each night to ensure consistent (and enough) sleep.
If you’re a parent, try to practice this with your children as well. This isn’t as easy as it sounds; however, having a consistent routine can benefit everyone’s mental health and overall well-being.
Connect Virtually With Friends and Family
Reaching out to friends and family is more important than ever. Times are tough and there’s no better way to feel supported than to connect with those closest to you. And while you may not be able to see these people face-to-face, video meetings and telephone chats can go a long way, notes Daniel Klibanoff.
When it comes to connecting virtually with friends and family during lockdown, try to schedule some times to check-in. This might be as simple as arranging a weekly video call or by simply scheduling a time each week for a telephone call.
Get Motivated and Set Goals
It’s never too late to set intentions for yourself. What better time than now to start? Spending more time at home can trigger our minds to wander, so why not take advantage of this alone time by indulging in some goal-setting activities?
By setting regular daily or weekly goals, you can prioritize what’s really important without feeling overwhelmed or overstretched, says Daniel Klibanoff. Depending on what you’re looking to accomplish, there’s a range of goal-planning journals and notebooks covering everything from cleaning, exercise, and diet to business and life goals.
